Mary Lee (Alter Ego)

Last semester in my photography class we were challenged with the concept of alter ego. For this I did two separate shoots. This one is more on the commercial side. A friend of mine that I graduated high school with is a complete girl. Blonde hair, heels, dresses, make up… she always looks perfect. Well, along with her girlie girl side comes motocross, which she does mostly on the weekends.

One last photo portraying the cross between her girlie girl side and her more boyish athletic side. Next is just photos to portray how girlie she is.

Mary has always been so smiley while we grew up, and she still is today.

This photoshoot did portray an alter ego, but not a deeper concept of an alter ego that my professor for my photography class was looking for. He loved these, but challenged me to a more hidden, posed alter ego. Those photos will be posted soon after this.

Liminality

This last semester I took a class called ‘Digital Photography.’ Not only did we do fun photo shoots in this class, but my professor also challenged us with deeper concepts, and how to portray those in our photos in our own style. One of these was the concept on liminality. the dictionary defines liminality as: the traditional period or phase of the right of passage. In my photos I focused on the concept of lines and direction.

Image

This photo has more liminality in it than I know how to explain. Here are just some of the aspects of liminality that I captured: the correlation with the rows of trees and the sidewalk and the contrasting lines of the shadows from each row of trees. This also captures the sense of direction.

Image

I really liked this concept of liminality with electrical towers. I went to a field and stood underneath, and in the middle, of an electrical tower to capture this. This not only shows the  ‘passing through’ of electricity, but also the lines and direction aspect of liminality.

Image

This is still underneath an electrical tower, but I was standing underneath one of the legs and this is how it looked. I LOVE this photo! I think it is my favorite out of the bunch.

I may have only gotten these three photos, but I believe they’re the strongest in showing my personal style, and understanding, or liminality. Another concept my professor challenged us with is Alter Ego, and that blog will be coming soon!
