Summer Adventure 2013

Every summer I work at a day care called Summer Adventures. Usually at least one of the projects that the kids do include a photo of their face attached to it. Well, this year instead of doing a project with their photos I decided over the entire summer that I would shoot photos of each kid, and aim to have 2-3 photos to give to each parent by the end of the summer. Photographing kids was a little more on the new side for me, but it was so much fun! I was working with 1-2  year olds, so it sometimes was a little challenging. At the end of the summer when the parents received the photos of their kids I got permission from most of them to use, and post, them because their kids are just so darn cute! These kids will forever be in my heart…

Image

Meet Haden. He is such a sweetie, and when he would talk he would just melt your heart.

Image

Image

Haden had been hiding his hand in his shirt sleeve, so we asked him, “Haden where’d your hand go?” Next thing we knew he had somehow taken his entire arm out of the sleeve, and up through the head whole.

Image

When he wasn’t talking and melting your heart he had his thumb in his mouth.

Image

Haden loved posing for the camera just a little too much… But he is just too darn cute!

Image

Those killer blue eyes…

Image

Haden has a twin whose name is Hailey.

Image

Image

One time while we were outside Hailey decided to fill her mouth with some dirt/mud. She’s still so cute, even with dirt all over her mouth!

Image

Hailey finally decided to pose for the camera.

Image

Meet our curly red hair girl, Lilly.

Image

Smiley Lilly.

Image

Lilly decided to make a funny face for the camera. I think she’s attempting fish lips.

Image

She even knows how to pose at age two!

Image

Meet Lillykate. Sadly this is the only photo I could get of her. I tried all summer! When I told her to look at the camera and smile, she’d say cheese and look the opposite direction of the camera. Haha, she is such an energetic toddler.

Image

Meet the handsome chunk that we referred to as Maddax. He was the youngest of the group at only 10 months, but weighed the same and even more than some of the 2 year olds.

Image

Image

The famous Maddax smirk. Such a chunk!

Image

Meet Noah. He was the happiest baby in the room. He never really wined or cried, but always smiley and happy!

Image

This is Noah’s mom’s favorite photo from the summer. She worked in the room, so she got to see all of the photos right away.

Image

I saved my favorite boy for last, meet Charlie. Charlie had a rough beginning of the summer because he had never really been away from mom. But we all got to watch him grow over the summer. At the beginning he used to have to be held all day or he’d cry, he couldn’t sleep at nap time unless you held him, and he wouldn’t eat much either. Over the summer he became the happiest, and most social boy in the room. He was one of the only kids who ate all of his lunch instead of dumping it on his lap or the floor. He enjoyed to cuddle, but still became very independent. And even for nap time he started sleeping on a mat all by himself. So proud!

Image

Over 4th of July break Charlie decided to pull a flat screen T.V. on top of himself, and he ended up with four stitches above his right eye.

Image

I plan on working again next summer at Summer Adventures, and hopefully I’ll be able to do a similar project. Every summer I get new kids, and each one of them leaves an imprint on my heart!

God+Life+Photography Retreat

So, earlier I posted the shoots from the workshop with the models on this retreat, well this post has all the general photos taken during this retreat hosted by Erin Johnson Photography. This involves: scenic photos, photos of the barn, photos of driving in the snow, and down time with the girls.

Image

So you know how I mentioned that this retreat was during a snow storm? Well, this is what we drove in on the way up to the Lake Superior Barn.

Image

This barn has three floors, and can hold about 18 people. On the third floor both bedroom look like this, holding about 6 people.

The little reading nook on the third floor.

Image

There were three bathrooms. All of them looked this adorable!

Image

The other four bedrooms, two on the main floor and two in the basement, looked like this and had a queen size bed.

Here’s the kitchen.

Image

Here’s the family room.

Image

The dinning table. We all have an obsession with the barn light fixture above the table.

Image

The old light bulbs that we all had an obsession with.

Image

All the photographers in one barn. Can’t get more creativity in one spot!

Image

We of course had to do a goofy photo!

Image

One more of the group, a cute cuddle together photo.

Another set of lightbulbs that everyone had an obsession with. They make for the best photos!

This is what happens when you put thirteen photographers in a barn, in the middle of no where, and during a snow storm. We all took photos of everything, including the food.

The snow covered wood.

Image

The so called hot tub. You have to burn wood for about nine hours in order for it to work. We never got to use it because burning wood was taking too long.

The beautiful Lake Superior Barn

Image

Since we were snowed in we had fun experimenting with photographing each other. We also got to work on poses and setting on our cameras.

Image

The day the models came was the only day it didn’t snow. I captured this unique photo of the barn.

This was taken about an hour before we all left the barn. It was an awesome retreat of fellowship. I hope to go again!

Patrick & Emily

This past April I went on a photography retreat hosted by Erin Johnson Photography called God+Life+Photography. This retreat took place at the Lake Superior Barn in Wisconsin. One couple volunteered to model for an engagement workshop, and the other a wedding workshop. Patrick and Emily were of course the wedding couple. They had gotten married in October of 2012, and participated in the workshop as kind of a six month anniversary celebration. They both brought the original outfits that they wore for their wedding. They are such a passionate couple, and definitely were not afraid to show it in front of the camera.

Image

This is the gorgeous bride for the workshop, Emily.

Image

Emily’s dress was a light pink, and went great with the barn theme that we were using for the workshop.

Image

One passionate moment….

Image

I love watching the moments where they just get lost because all that matters is each other.

Image

He knew how to make her laugh…

Image

An innocent kiss is what started it all…

Image

Patrick’s hands are what showed his passion for Emily!

Image

It’s all about the beautiful bride, even in Patrick’s mind.

Image

The very beautiful Emily. I still can not get over how beautiful she is!

Image

Having fun in the snow in her fairytale dress…

Image

Some privacy for the passionate couple…

Image

Laughter is the key to a happy marriage!

Image

The innocence of a single kiss…

Image

Patrick could NOT keep his eyes off of her! But who could blame him…

Image

Another kissable moment…

Image

I have a sad obsession with heated moments, especially those leading up to the kiss.

Image

Again with my obsession with heated moments…

Image

Another lost in the moment capture…

Image

Erin Johnson provided some of the cutest accessories for the shoot, such as this “Happily Ever After Begins Here” sign.

Image

One last kiss with the cute barn in the back ground… A true Fairytale!

Jason & Kelly

This past April I went on a photography retreat hosted by Erin Johnson Photography called God+Life+Photography. This retreat took place at the Lake Superior Barn in Wisconsin. One couple volunteered to model for an engagement workshop, and the other a wedding workshop. Jason and Kelly were of course the engagement couple. Funny thing is they were not engaged at the time, but got engaged a few weeks after the retreat. There was still snow on the ground since it was the day after one of our famous snow storms.

Image

Here are Jason and Kelly. She had the brought the cutest outfits!

Image

Got to love the lead up to a kiss…

Image

Intimate photos are best interpreted in black and white, focusing on the heat, passion, and emotion that the couple is feeling.

Image

There’s something so sweet and innocent about couples just simply holding hands.

Image

You know he’s the one when he becomes your best friend, and can make you laugh in any situation.

Image

I can’t help myself when it comes to close, intimate moments. They are my favorite!

After a few hours of photographing we decided to stop because Kelly was freezing in all of her adorable clothes. The girls on the retreat brought them inside, made coffee and hot chocolate, and talked for a while before they left. Jason and Kelly have three daughters. All of them so beautiful. They were such a funny couple, keeping all of us laughing.

Introduction

Hey, my name is Samantha Martinson. I am going into my Junior year at the University of Northwestern, St. Paul. I am an Elementary Education major with what is called a C.A.L.E emphasis, which stands for communication, arts, literature, and enlgish. I decided to go into Education because I have a language disorder, meaning I struggle with communication, comprehension, and formulating ideas into words. Throughout Elementary School I was “looked over” by almost every teacher I had. I want to go into teaching and give every student the same opportunity no matter how that student may learn, and help those students who are slower in comprehension. Image

Since I am in college I still live at home here in Minnesota. I live with my mom, dad, sister Savannah (16), and brother Wyatt (14). We have three pets, two dogs and one rat. We have a boxer named Zeek and a Rottweiler named Xena. The rat is my sister’s, and in all honesty I have no idea what his name is.Image

I have a boyfriend (Noah) of almost three years, come December 13th. We were Elementary crushes back in fifth grade, which was rekindled in High School. He finally asked me out in the middle of our Senior year, and we’ve been together ever since. He is a graphic designer over at the University of Minnesota, and is also going into his Junior year. Image

Now last subject for this entry is the reason why I decided to create a blog, which surprisingly wasn’t just for a personal reason, but I also have my own photography business. It is called Through the Lens Photography, and it focuses on portraits, events, couples, and nature. I’ve been trying to get more attention to it as it is now a legal business, and this blog will be about my photos for the most part. I’ve been doing photography since I was 10. I started out with film; my dad sadly raised me on black and white film, so I have an obsession with black and white photos. When I was 13 I switched to doing photos digitally. I loved doing photos of people, things, and animals, but what I was most fascinated by was the details of God’s creation I could capture with my camera that would go unnoticed every day. Image

So, this is me…
